chapter 18

  1. what r some of the commom types of support equipment? why use it?
    • filler pumps, tank pumps, nurse or mixing tanks, front end loaders, ect.
    • they make spray operation more efficient.
  2. when choose the pesticide application eqiupment for a job, what do u have to consider?
working conditions, pesticide formulation, type of area treated, possible problems, ect.
  3. who usually uses dusters?
home gardeners, pest control operators, n truck gardeners for individual spot treatment of plants or small areas.
  4. can seeders n fertilizer spreaders be used to apply granules? r changes necessary?
    • yes.
    • no changes r necessary.
  5. can a applicator usually " get by " with owning just a granule spreader? why or why not ?
no, because granule materials do not stick well to foilage n additional machinery is needed.
  6. what types of pesticide equipment might u choose if u wanted to reach pests in hard-to-get-at places n then reoccupy the area soon afterwards?
    aerosol generators or " foggers " .
  7. would a fogger be a good choice if there is a sensitive area nearby n the wind is blowing softly ?
  8. which type of sprayer would u probably choose for treating a small garden in a residential area?
    hand operated.
  9. do only homeowners have good use for hand operated sprayers? explain your answer?
no. the custom applicator will often find it convenient for small jobs that do not require larger powered equipment.
  10. if your job was to treat a few acres of forage crop n water was not easily available, what type of sprayer would u probably choose? why?
a low pressure boom sprayer. use a low volume of dilute spray so that one tankful will cover a larger area.
  11. would u use the same sprayer if the pesticide was only formulated as a wettable powder n the crop had dense foliage? why?
no. they will not adequately penetrate n cover dense foliage because of their low capacity. wettable powder formulations often settle out.
  12. is a hydralic sprayer a low pressure or a high pressure sprayer?
    a high pressure sprayer.
  13. what type of sprayer would u probably choose to treat a oak tree in a backyard with a wettable powder formulation? why?
high pressure sprayer. mechanical agitators r standard n keep wettable powders well mixed in the tank.
  14. if water was not readily available n there was no wind, would u choose another sprayer to treat the oak tree? which one? why?
yes. a airblast sprayer. it works well if there r no windy conditions n a little water will cover a large area. only the concentrate spray tank must be filled.
  15. if u were an inexperienced applicator, which type of sprayer might easily lead u to injure crops or wildlife by overdosing w concentrated pesticide?
    air blast sprayer.
  16. how much must the pressure increase to double the flow rate?
pressure must be increased 4 times to double the flow rate.
  17. name the nozzle material that is least resistant to wear, and the that is most durable?
    • brass - least resistant to wear.
    • ceramic- most durable.
  18. name a pump that has automatic pressure relief characteristics?
    centrifugal pumps, flexible-impellar pumps.
  19. what is a major advantage of ground driven pumps?
the application rate is held constant as the speed changes.
  20. list the 3 functions of a spray nozzle?
    • to meter or regulate the flow of the liquid.
    • atomize the liquid stream into droplets.
    • spread drplets in a specific pattern.
  21. how do u determine if a spray tip is worn?
worn nozzles spray bad patterns n higher flow rates than new nozzles. to determine wear compare flow rates to a new one.
  22. when is a spray tip worn too much to use?
if the flow rate is 5% greater than a new one.
  23. which nozzle delievers a wide flat spray pattern consisting of large droplets?
    flooding nozzles.
  24. when should a sprayer be cleaned?
clean ur sprayer after each day used.
  25. when cleaning a sprayer, how many times is water put into the tank n flushed out?
water is flushed out 3 times when cleaning a sprayer properly.
