  1. Grasping reflex
    infant's clinging response to a touch on its palm
  2. Rooting reflex
    infant's response in turning toward the source of touching that occurs anywhere around his/her mouth
  3. Telegraphic speech
    • kind or verbal utterances where words are left out, but the meaning is usually clear
    • Ex. youn child's speech
  4. Schema
    • a specific plan for knowing the world
    • >mental representations of the world
  5. Object permanence
    a child's relization that an object exics evenwhen they cannot see/touch it
  6. Conservation
    • principle that a given quantity does not change when its appearance is changed
    • Ex.- same amnt of water in 2 diff. shaped glasses
  7. Authoritarian families
    • parents are the bosses
    • set code of conduct- use to attempt to control/shape/evaluate the behavior/attitudes of children
  8. Democratic/authoritative family
    • adolescents participate in the decisions affecting their lives
    • more discussing and negotiating
    • Children make some choices, but parents can veto them
  9. Permissive/laissez-faire family
    • children having the final say
    • parents less controling, have nonpunishing/accepting attitude
