Describe the Appel
- The Appel is a preparation step used to commence a movement during which Close Hold is NOT maintained
- It's commenced from Close Hold but with pelvis rotated to the Right (lady Left); feet together, on Toes and weight on Left Foot (Lady Right)
- Is a strong lowering through the Right foot and leg accompanied by the approprppriate lead for figure being danced
- Footwork is Ball Flat
- To indicate a turn to PP, the man's left arm is tracked: lowered to chest level and Left wrist rotated right (clockwise); this is commenced during preceeding beat
-
Describe the March
- The basic walk forward in Paso Doble.
- It can be used to move forward on either the right or the left foot, by the man or the woman
- The timing is usually one beat of the music
- Footwork is Heel Flat
- Transfer of full weight occurs after the foot has arrived in position and is controlled by tension in the other leg
-

-
Sur Place, Notes
- Note 1:
- Provides and opportunityy to build up kinetic energy in preparation for the following figure, particularly one started with an Appel
- in this instance, a rotation of the pelvis to the man's right (lady's left) will occur without changing foot or shoulder position
- This pelvic rotation is started on the firts step and continued on each step of the Sur Place (usually over 4 or 8 beats)
- Note 2:
- Sur Place can also be danced on Toe (e.g. if followed by an Appel) or Flat (e.g. during Huit)

Expalin Time Signature
- The Paso Doble time signature is 2/4
- where the first number denotes the number of beats in a bar, and
- the second number denotes the value of those beats (i.e. 4 = 4 quarters of a note = crotchet)
-
Explain Rhythm
- Rhythm is the regular occurence of an accented beat or beats in the music
- it gives character to the music and dance
- its signature, how we recognise the dance
- in Paso Doble there are no percussive accents but there is a musical accent on beat 1
-
Explain Tempo
- tempo is the speed at which the music is played
- defined in bars per minute (sometimes beats per minute)
- for Paso Doble this is 60/62 bars per minute (= 120/124 beats)
-
Explain Timing and Beat Value
- Timing is the way we count the passing of the music to ourselves and our pupils
- Helps us identify and control when things happen in the dance
- For Paso Doble the timing is 1, 2 where we step on each number
- However, most figures in Paso Doble consist of more than two steps, which can lead to overly complicated counting
- To overcome this, an acceptable alternative is to count the number of steps in the figure (i.e 1-4, 1-8 or 1-16)
-
Describe the Paso Doble Poise
- Stand naturally with feet together and shoulders relaxed and level
- Straighten the spine and raise the rib cage without raising the shoulders
- The pelvis is tilted forward
- The weight is collected well over the balls of the feet
- Knees are straightened but not locked
-
Describe Close Hold
- Dancers stand facing one another in close contact from thigh to chest
- The lady is slightly to the right of the man
- The man's right hand is placed on the lady's back, cupping just below her left shoulder blade
- His right arm is held in a gentle curve with his elbow at approximately chest height
- The left arm is raised with the left hand, wrist straight, is held at approximately head height
- His left hand gently holds the lady's right hand on an imaginary line between the two bodies
- The ladys left hand is placed gently on the man's right shoulder
- Her left arm rests lightly on the man's right arm, following the same curve.
-
Describe Promenade Position
- From Close Hold both dancers turn outward, man to left, lady to right
- Man's left hand, lady's right, is lowered to just below shoulder height
- Man's right arm is forward, slightly retracted just below shoulder level and hand positioned at the top of the lady's left arm
- When both dancers are moving in PP, body contact is lost and the couple are approximately 10" (25cm) apart
- There are some figures where man and lady do not use normally opposite foot positions, although the couple do not move together in PP, foot positions are given as "in PP"
-
Describe Counter Promenade Position
- From Close Hold both dancers turn outward, man to right, lady to left
- Man's left hand, lady's right, is raised above the head, elbow slightly retracted
- Man's right arm is forward, sligtly retracted just below shoulder level and hand positioned at the top of the lady's left arm
- Bodies are approximately 10" (25cm) apart
- There are some figures where man and lady do not use normally opposite foot positions, although the couple do not move together in CPP, foot positions are given as "in CPP"
-
Describe Fallaway Position
From promenade position, both dancers step backward, man on left foot, lady on right
-
Describe Open Position
- Dancers stand facing one another at approximately arms' length
- Weight is on either foot with lady standing normally opposite
- Hand hold in open position will depend on the following figure and can be
- - no hold
- - man's left to lady's right
- - man's right to lady's left
- - man's right to lady's right
- - man's left to lady's left
