    Imbalanced nutrition: less than body requirements
  2. What is cachetic?
    One who is severerly underweight with muscle wasting...This is observed when nurse is doing an assessment on a patient.
  3. What medication is used to help treat anorexia nervosa patient's?
    Fluoxetine (Prozac). It is useful in reducing the occurrence of relapse in anorexia nervosa once the patient has reached a maintenance weight and is taking in adequate dietary tryptophan (precursor for serotonin).
  4. What type of therapy is deemed important for anorexia nervosa patients?
    Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)...This type of therapy is used to help diminish distorted attitudes and eating disorder behaviors.
  5. What are some signs to look for when assessing a bulimia nervosa patient?
    A nurse should take a close look at the patient's fingers and teeth. TAlso, the patient's parotid glands will be enlarged. The patient's fingers may show signs of his/ her skin "burning away" due to the patient using it's fingers to purge. The patient's teeth will appear rotten due to the gastric acids eating away at the enamel on the patient's teeth when vomiting.
  6. What is a common diagnosis for bulimia nervosa?
    Disturbed body image, Chronic low self esteem
  7. What is the most effective therapy for bulimia nervosa patients?
    CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)
  8. What medication is used to hep treat patients with bulimia nervosa and why?
    Fluoxetine (Prozac). This medication reduces the number of binge eating and vomiting episodes in patients with and w/o comorbid depression.
  9. What medication is used to help with patients who suffer from binge eating disorder?
    Sertraline (Zoloft) which reduces the frequency of binges and overall severity of the illness.
  10. What is purging?
    Vomiting after meals...This is common in patients who suffer from bulimia nervosa.
  11. What is very common in female patients suffering from anorexia nervosa?
