Media literacy defined
Media literacy is a pedagogical framework for the study, analysis, and eventual production of media in the classroom
Media texts are “read” like poems or stories.
They are analyzed, looking for the same results students have sought from their texts for years:
author’s intent
reader’s reception
historical context, etc.
teachers require students to write essays for assessment
media students produce audio & video for assessment

The Media Literacy Classroom
A Progressive Classroom
Students must have command of themselves
Critical thinking will hone their judgment
Learning is a social activity
A participatory culture will allow this to happen in an organic way that mirrors students’ lives outside of class
A democratic classroom
Democracy = intelligent participation through critical analysis
NOT passive acceptance of given facts.
teachers must differentiate their instruction
Liberal Media Literacy
This is traditional textural analysis
Critical Thinking is self explanatory
Participatory Culture
In a school with a computer lab there are no barriers to engagement
Differentiated Instruction

perceptual landscape shapes how our minds will develop
Lake house different from suburban house
Nobody is born a democrat or republican
Decision is made based on how you perceive the world
The media landscape shapes our perceptual landscape
someone who only listens to one media outlet has avery narrow perceptual landscape
Rather than seeing the world as it is, people see it as it’s represented in the media.
When the media celebrates America’s plentiful resources people are wasteful
during pushes for ecology and green energy people conserve
