  1. Listening and Smelling Examination are done
    silultaneously with inquiry and inspection exam
  2. voice can provide info regarding the state of
    • nose (lung)
    • mouth (sp\st)
    • Heart (tongue)
    • throat
    • lungs
  3. voice can indicate
    emotional states such as sadness, timidity, agitation, anger, and fear
  4. normal voice
    natural, balanced, smooth
  5. voice is affected by
    • body structure
    • emotion
    • gender
  6. voice of repletion and heat patterns
    loud, coarse voice, agitation, incessant talking
  7. voice of vacuity and cold patterns
    • weak, thin voice
    • reluctance to speak (lung qi or cold)
    • could be a weak cough
  8. disharmony of liver (5 phases)
  9. disharmony of heart (5 phases)
  10. disharmony of spleen (5 phases)
  11. disharmony of lung (5 phases)
  12. disharmony of kidney (5 phases)
  13. sudden loss of voice can be due to
    • external attack (wind heat, wind cold, warm, dryness)
    • can be due to excessive talking\shouting damaging the lung qi and yin.
  14. gradual loss of voice due to
    vacuity of lung qi or lung yin
  15. hoarse voice due to
    • lung yin xu if chronic
    • attack of warm dryness or wind heat (acute)
  16. Breath and respiration involve
    lung which governs qi and the kidney which grasps qi
  17. repletion breathe
    loud, rough breathing, acute
  18. vacuity breathe
    weak, thin breathing kidney and qi xu and lung qi xu
  19. repletion cough
    loud cough
  20. vacuity cough
    • weak cough, faint sound
    • lung qi xu or lung yin xu
  21. dry cough
    • lung yin xu (chronic)
    • or lung dryness (acute)
  22. sighing due to
    generally due to emotional depression, constraint of liver qi, may be due to qi xu of lung
  23. vomiting - sudden, loud, forceful (often with heat)
    possibly due to food poisoning
  24. vomiting - vacuity
    low, faint sound, forceless (often with cold)
  25. hiccough (hiccup)
    counterflow of rebellious st qi
  26. repletion hiccup
    • repetitive, loud, forceful
    • liver qi invading st, or eating too quickly
  27. vacuity hiccup
    • weak, forceless, quiet
    • st qi xu or st yin xu, usually chronic
  28. belching cause
    from air in st exiting up and emitting a sound
  29. belching repletion
    loud, long sound: cold attack stomach, liver\st disharmony or food stagnation
  30. belching vacuity
    vacuity of st qi
  31. belching with bad smell
    full heat, food stagnation (excess heat)
  32. belching with no bad smell
    cold in stomach
  33. borborygmi (gurgling in intestines)
    loud sound is replete; low sound is vacuity

    sweet or fragnant

  54. may be a bad sign if body odor
    contradicts constitutional element type i.e. spleen type with rancid odor
