When might we assess a pts temp in PT?
to decide if we can continue with treatment - if temp is elevated or decreased, pts response to exercise might be abnormal
-
What is the normal oral temp? rectal?
oral- 98.6 (96.8-99.3)
rectal- 97.8-100.3
-
When might it be necessary to take an axillary temp?
when all other sites are neither possible or safe
-
How is a persons heart rate affected by aerobic exercise?
it will increase rapidly with activity, plateau as exercise plateaus, and decreases as activity decreases
-
What are some factors that affects a persons heart rate, and why do we need to be aware of them?
- age (increased age, increased HR)
- gender (males have lower HR)
- environmental temp (lower temp, lower HR, higher temp, higher HR)
- infection (increases HR)
- meds (increase or decrease HR)
we need to know when to modify or terminate treatment, may need to get other medical personnel to protect the pt from harm and cause undue stress
-
Should radial and apical pulses be equal?
yes - cardiac disease and peripheral artery disease will make the values differ
-
What is the normal pulse rate for adults?
60-100
-
How do you measure body composition with skin fold?
- use calipers
- measure site 3 times each
- women - tricep, suprailiac, thigh
- men - pectoral, abdomen, thigh
- use avg. of the 3 sites
-
How do you measure body comp. using hydrostatic weighing?
- place in poool of water
- measure the displacement of water
-
How do you measure body comp. using girth?
use tape measure to measure 3 sites
-
How do you measure using bioelectrical impedance?
- get pt height and weight
- plug info into machine
- hold out infront of body
-
What are the purposes for setting up a sterile field?
- prevent contamination
- use for wound and bandage changes
-
What are the 4 rules of asepsis?
- 1.know which items are sterile
- 2.know which items are not sterile
- 3.separate sterile from nonsterile
- 4.if sterile item becomes contaminated you start over
-
Whats most important in protective isolation?
donning clothes - your protecting the pt from you
-
How do you don protective isolation garments?
- cap
- mask
- *wash hands*
- gown
- gloves
-
How do you remove protective isolation garments?
- gown
- gloves
- *wash hands*
- mask
- cap
- *wash hands*
-
Whats the purpose of handwashing?
prevents spread of infection by reducing number of pathogenic microorganisms
-
What soap do you use for handwashing and why?
liquid - bar soap is considered contaminated, pathogens can survive on tha bar
-
What temp do we use to wash our hands and why?
warm water - soap will lather and there will be less skin irritation
-
What factors may affect a pts BP?
- age (younger slightly lower, older slightly higher)
- physical activity
- emotional status (increases with stress)
- meds
- size and condition of arteries
- blood volume
- cardiac output
-
What are 3 factors that affect accuracy of BP values?
- arm position (if hanging down the hydrostatic pressure will increase)
- muscle contraction (can occlude secondary vessels)
- site of measurment (often higher in left arm than right)
-
How is the BP affected with aerobic exercise?
systolic will increase with exercise, plateau when exercise does, and decrease with exercise...diastolic should remain essentially unchanged (however 10-15mmHg increase is normal)
-
What is the normal response to aerobic exercise for respirations?
increased rate and depth
-
What are factors that affect respirations?
- age (very young and old have increased rate)
- emotional status
- air quality
- altitude (increased altitude, increased respirations)
- disease (pulmonary has increased rate and depth)
-
What is the normal adult respiration rate?
12-18
