Define Pathogenic
Pathogenic: capacity to cause disease
Define Disease
Disease: altered state of health from the normal state
Define Infection
Infection: presence of multiple microbes in a body
Que es 'Normal Flora"?
-microbes associated with our bodies that do not produce disease under normal circumstances.
- exact compostion of normal flora varies from one individual to another.
How is normal flora beneficial to your health?
1. microbial antagonism
-competition
-bacteriocins
-waste such as lower pH
2. Production of vitamins
3. Stimulation of immune system
Why is taking broad spectrum antibiotics discouraged?
Broad spectrum ab's while a rapid tx destroy normal flora which can lead to a variety of complications.....?????
Please update....
What are opportunistic pathogens?
Normal flora organisms that can cause disease when your immune system is down or the balance of the normal flora is upset.
Conditions that could create opportunistic infections.
-immunocompromised host
-introduction into unusual sites
-upset of balance of normal flora
Endemic
Endemic: constantly present in a population.
Epidemic
Epidemic: disease or other occurrence whose incidence is higher than expected within a region or population.
Symptoms
Symptoms: effects of a disease experienced by the patient.
Communicable diseases
Communicable diseases: diseases spread from an infected animal or person to another animal or person.
Acute
Acute: rapid onset, a short course
Chronic vs Latent disease
Chronic disease: (chronic infections- infections that develop slowly & persist for months or years)
Latent disease: (latent infections- infections where the infectious agent is present but not active)
What is required for the spread of an infection?
1. Source > reservoirs
2. Mode of transmission:
-thru vehicles (objects or fomites, air, food, water)
-thru vectors (animals or insects)
-direct contact w/carriers (sexual, physical contacts)
What are nosocomial infections?
Infection aquired during hospitalization.
What contributes to high incidence of nosocomial infections?
1. microbes in the hospital environment
2. compromised host
3. chain of transmission
What is the function of the CDC?
