Insulins

  1. Rapid acting insulins (3)
    • Aspart (Novolog)
    • Lispro (Humalog)
    • Glulisine (Apidra)
    • - note they all sound like amino acids
  2. Short acting insulin (1)
Recombinant Human ("Regular" or Humulin R)
  3. Intermediate acting Insulin (1)
    NPH (Humulin N, Novolin N)
  4. Slow acting insulin
    • Detemir (Levemir)
    • Glargine (Lantus)
  5. Aspart, Lispro, Glulisine Med Chem
Mutation of 1-2 amino acids to inhibit aggregation of Insulin
  6. Glargine Med Chem
Glargine is soluble at pH 4, but precipitates at physiological pH. This causes slow release.
  7. NPH Med Chem
Complexation of insulin with Protamine reduces insulin's rate of absorbtion
  8. Detemir Med Chem
Attaching a fatty acid slows insulin absorbtion because the fatty acid causes the insulin molecules to aggregate with themselves and albumin
  9. Insulin ADR's (5)
    • Hypoglycemia
    • Weight gain
    • Lipoatrophy at injection site
    • Lipohypertrophy at injection site
    • Allergy/sensitivity (rare)
