anatomy muscles and bones of the hip

  1. os coxa
    • is formed from 3 separate boney elements
    • the ilium
    • the ischium
    • the pubis
  2. 6 deep hip rotators
    • piriformis
    • superior gemellus
    • obturator internus
    • inferior gemellus
    • obturator externus
    • quadratus femoris
  3. piriformis
    origin
    insertion
    function
    • origin- anterior surface of the sacrum
    • insertion- greater trochanter
    • function- lateral rotation of the extended thigh, abducts the flexed thigh
    • *the muscle passes through the greater sciatic notch*
  4. superior gemellus
    origin
    insertion
    function
    • origin- ischial spine
    • insertion- greater trochanter
    • function- lateral rotation of the hip, helps abduct o flexed thigh
  5. obturator internus
    origin
    insertion
    function
    • origin- obturator foramen
    • insertion- greater trochanter of the femur
    • function- lateral rotation of the hip, abducts the flexed thigh
  6. inferior gemellus
    origin
    insertion
    function
    • origin- ischial tuberosity
    • insertion- greater trochanter
    • function- lateral rotation of the hip, helps abduct a flexed thigh
  7. obturator externus
    origin
    insertion
    function
    • origin- the external surface of the obturator membrane (foramen)
    • insertion- greater trochanter
    • function- lateral rotation of hip, helps abduct a flexed thigh
  8. quadratus femoris
    origin
    insertion
    function
    • origin- ischial tuberosity
    • insertion- greater trochanter
    • function- lateral rotation
    • *this is the most inferior muscle of this group*
  9. 4 gluteal muscles
    • gluteus minimis
    • gluteus medius
    • gluteus maximus
    • tensor fasciae latae
  10. gluteus minimis
    origin
    insertion
    function
    • origin- between the anterior and inferior gluteal lines of the ilium
    • insertion- anterior and lateral surface of the greater trochanter of the femur
    • function- abduction of the hip joint
    • *deepest and smallest muscle of the group*
  11. gluteus medius
    origin
    insertion
    function
    • origin- between the anterior and posterior gluteal lines
    • insertion- lateral surface of the greater trochanter of the femur
    • function- powerful abductor of the hip, anterior fibers rotate the hip medially
  12. gluteus maximus
    origin
    insertion
    function
    • origin- from the rough ilium behind the posterior gluteal line, the posterior iliac crest, the lower posterior sacrum, and the side of the coccyx
    • insertion- large upper teo thirds of the muscle attaches into the IT band of the fascia lata, lower third to the gluteal tuberosity
    • function- extends the fexed thigh and lateral rotation of hip, abduction of the hip
  13. tensor fasciae latae
    origin
    insertion
    function
    • origin- outer lip of the anterior iliac crest
    • insertion- IT band
    • function- medial rotation, flexion of the hip
  14. 2 hip flexor muscles
    • psoas major
    • iliacus
  15. psoas major
    origin
    insertion
    function
    • origin- transverse proccesses of the lumber vertebrae and lateral aspect of lumber vertebrae
    • insertion- lesser trochanter of the femur
    • function- powerful flexor of the hip, weak lateral rotator of hip, extends the lumber verterbral
  16. iliacus
    origin
    insertion
    function
    • origin- superior half of the iliac fossa
    • insertion- converges with the psoas major tendon to the lesser trochanter of femur
    • function- powerful flexor of the hip, weak lateral rotator of the hip joint
