Substance abuse: a non-maladaptive use of alcohol or other drug.

Drug: any substance that, when absored into the body of a living organism, alters normal bodily functions.

Ex: excedrin for headache, coffee to wake up in the morning

Substance intoxication: a reversible condition brought on by excessive use ofa drug such as alcohol.

Characteristics: difficulty staying awake and thinking clearly, rapid shifts in mood, impaired judgment, increased impulsivity.

Substance abuse: the repeated use of substances to the point that recurring problems are evident.

Ex: Missing work, mistreatin gchildren, legal problems, fighting or arguing about intoxication.

Substance dependance: refers to a maladaptive pattern of substance use potentially defined by tolerance & withdrawel.

Substance withdrawel: refers to maladaptive behavioral changes when a person stops using a drug.

Tolerance: refers to need to ingest greater amounts of a drug to achieve the same effect.
