    • chemical communication system
    • sends chem. messages- hormones
    • sent through the blood stream
  2. Hormones
    • chemical substance
    • carry messages through body in blood
    • metabolism, growth, reproduction
  3. Pituitary Gland
    • center control of endocrine sys.
    • secretes large number of hormones
  4. Hypothalamus Gland
    monitors amnt of hormones in blood & corrects imbalances
  5. Thyroid gland
    • produces hormone thyroxine
    • stimulates certain chem, reactions important for tissues
  6. Hyperthyroidism
    • too much thyroxine
    • may cause loss of weight/ sleep
    • cause overactivity
  7. Adrenal Glands
    • Active when angry/frightened
    • release ephinephrine & nonephinephrine [(non)adrenaline]
    • also secrete cortical steroids
  8. Sex Glands
    • Testes- produce testosterone
    • Ovaries- produce estrogen & progesterone
  9. Neurotransmitters Vs. Hormones
    • Hormones- released into the blood & diffuses throughout the body
    • Neurotransmitters- released right beside cell that it is to excite/inhibit
