  1. infection
    a pathological process produced by a microorganism that is detrimental to the host
  2. Pathological process
    • -does damage on the cellular level.
    • -lung tissue looks abnormal due to infection
    • -depresses cell growth
  3. Exotoxin
    • -Secreted by living cells
    • -enterotoxin affects the lining of the GI tract.
    • -Nuerotoxins interfere with the normal nerve impulse transmission
    • -Ex: botulism, toxic shock syndrome, scarlet fever
  4. Endotoxin
    • -derived from the cell wall of the gram negative bacteria
    • -liberated when cell is ruptured
    • -Ex: E.coli, Shingles, Salmonella
  5. detrimental to host
    • - tissues invaded are unable to function normally.
    • -Ex: pneumonia = oxygen in lungs decreases
    • surgical infections= wounds cant heal properly
  6. Nasocomial infection
    Hospital acquired infection
  7. healthcare associated infection
    arose from the actions or treatments of the healthcare provider
  8. community aquired infection
    NOT healthcare acquired
  9. Colonization
    the presence of microbes without infection
  10. Factors that alter the bodys normal flora
    • -corticosteroid therapy
    • -extremes of age
    • -loss of intact physical barriers such as skin
    • -antimicrobial therapy
    • -in hospital, normal flora changes in 24 hours
  11. factors that alter normal flora
    • -pregnancy
    • -smoking
    • -drug and alcohol use
    • -diet
  12. clinical signs of infection (5)
    • -redness
    • -heat
    • -swelling
    • -pain
    • -pus

    • exogenous ( other than host)
    • -people
    • -animals
    • -foods
    • endogenous (host normal flora)

    • 3. portal of exit ( how infection exits) ex: respiratory- cough
    • 4. transmission (how its spread) ex: airborne
    • 5. portal of entry ( how infection enters) ex: respiratory tract - breath it in
    • 6. suseptable host ( who gets infected) ex: everyone
