Lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) is an integral enzyme associated with circulating high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles, and it may also be found in hepatocytes. Circulating LCAT hydrolyzes an UFA from the 2-position of PLs in HDL, and passes that UFA on to CH as it enters the HDL particle from tissue cells. This accounts for the majority of circulating cholesterol esters (CEs). Note as well that the LCAT reaction is reversible.
