Look at all the effects (second page) and side effects (last page) of ganglion blockers in the notes, all the drugs in this section have these effects.
Trimethapan
Competitve antagonist of neuronal nicotinic receptor
Used iv
Rapid onset of action, but it shows tachyphylaxis (progressive decrease of effectiveness with continual use)
Malignant Hypertension: severe syndrome characterizied by a very high diastolic BP
Postoperative Hypertension: less severe syndrome characterized by a high systolic and diastolic BP.
Tubocurarine
Competitive antagonist
Blocks mostly muscle nictonic receptor (leads to skeletal muscle relaxation) and has modest ganglion nicotinic blocking activity
Mecamylamine
Non-competitive ganglion nicotinic blocker
Open channel block of the nictonic receptor (can't be overcome by increasing ACh)
Crosses blood-brain barrier
Hypertension Treatment: drug causes bothersome side effects at therapeutic doses
Hemicholinium
Non-competitive ganglion nicotinic blocker
Open channel block of the nictonic receptor (can't be overcome by increasing ACh)
