Resting potential (RP) occurs when the axon is not conducting a nerve inpulse ( sleeping is one example) More positive ions are outside than inside the nerveous system. There is negative charge or -65mv inside the axon. More Na+ outside than inside. More K+ inside than outside.

Nerve inpulse reaches the axon terminal. Calcium ions enter the axon terminal that stimulate the synaptic vesicles to fuse with the presynaptic membrane. Neurotransmitters are released and diffused across the synapse and bind with the posynaptic membrane to inhibit exite the neuron.

The brain and spinal cord
