Law mad and applied by judges as they resolve disputs among private parties. It's the foundation of agency, contract, property, and tort law. Oldest source of law in the United States.
Case Reporters:
The decisions written by judges to explain their rulings in important cases, and some no-so-important cases published in books.
Precedent:
Past cases similar to current cases that judges face and look to for advice. This give the court a means of consistency.
