cervical branch of the facial nerve
Platysma muscle Action:
inferiorly draws four corners of mouth; and widens it; superiorly raise the skin of the neck when teeth are clenched, thus showing tension

manubrium of the sternum
medial end of clavicle
sternohyoid muscle insertion
body of hyoid bone
sternohyoid muscle innervation
C1 - C3 by branches of ansa cervicalis
sternohyoid muscle action:
depress the hyoid bone; after elevation from swallowing
sternohyoid muscle blood supply

facial a./v.
lingual a./ v.
thyrohyoid muscle origin
olique line of the thyroid cartilage
thyrohyoid muscle insertion
inferior border of the hyoid bone
greater horn of hyoid bone
thyrohyoid muscle innervation
C1 by hypoglossal nerve
thyrohyoid muscle action:
depress the hyoid and elevates the larynx
thyrohyoid muscle blood supply:
superior thyroid a./ v.
inferior thyroid a./ v.
sternocleidomastoid muscle origin
lateral surface of the mastoid process of temporal bone
lateral half of superior nachel line
sternocleidomastoid muscle insertion
sternal head
: anterior surface of the manubrium
clavicular head
: superior surface ofmiddle 3rd of clavicle
sternocleidomastoid muscle innervation
spinal accessory nerve and C2 & C3
sternocleidomastoid muscle action:
unilateral: turning head to same side and rotates it so face is turned superiorly towards opposite side
bilateral: allows chin to head towards manubrium; chin is thrust forward with head kept level
sternocleidomastoid muscle blood supply:
superior thyroid a./ v.
Omohyoid muscle Origin
superior border of the scapula near the suprascapular notch
omohyoid muscle insertion
inferior border of the hyoid bone
omohyoid muscle innervation
C1 - C3 by branches of ansa cervicalis
Omohyoid muscle action
depress, retract and steady the hyoid bone
omohyoid muscle blood supply:
superior and inferior thyroid a./ v.
sternothyroid muscle origin:
posterior portion of the manubrium
sternothyroid muscle insertion:
oblique line of the thyroid cartilage
