  1. What is statistics?
The study of how to collect, organize, analyze, and intrpret numerical information from data.
  2. What are the people or objects included in a study?
    Individuals
  3. What is a variable?
A characteristic of the individual to be measured or observed.
  4. What describes an individual by placing the individual into a category or group?
    A Qualitative Variable
  5. What has a value or numerical measurment for which operations such as addition or averaging make sense?
    A Quantitative Variable
  6. What is Population Data?
The data are from every individual of interest.
  7. What is Sample Data?
The date are from only some of the individuals of interest?
  8. What is a population parameter?
A numerical measure that describes an aspect of a population.
  9. What is a Sample Statistic?
A numerical measure that describes an aspect of a sample.
  10. Levels of Measurement:
    Nominal level of measurement
    • Applies to data that consist of names, lables, or catagories.
    • There are no implied criteria by which the data can be ordered from smallest to largest.
  11. Levels of Measurement:
    Ordianal level of measurement
    • Applies to data that can be arranged in order
    • Differences between data values either cannot be determined or are meaningless
  12. Levels of Measurement:
    Interval Level of Measurement
    • Applies to data that can be arranged in order
    • Differences between data values are meaningful
  13. Levels of Measurement:
    Ratio level of measurement
    • Applies to data that can be arranged in order.
    • Both differences between data value and ratios of data values are meaniful
    • Data at the ratio level have a true zero
  14. What involves methods of organizing, picturing, and summarizing information from samples or population?
    Descriptive Statistics
  15. What involves methods of using information from a sample to draw conclusions regarding the populuation?
    Inferential Statistics
  16. What is a Simple Random Sample?
of n measurements from a population is a subset of the population selected in such a manner that every sample of size n from the population has an equal chance of being selected.
