  1. Bupropion (Wellbutrin, Zyban), Mirtazapine (Remeron), Nefazodone (generic), Trazodone (Desyrel), Venafaxine (Effexor)
other antidepressants. decreases neuronal reuptake of dopamine in CNS with deiminished neuronal uptake of serotonin and NE. Risk for hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia
  2. Lithium (Lamicial), Olanzepine (Zyprexa), Quetiapine (Seroquel)
Antimanic-Alters sodium transport on nerve/muscle cells, inhibits release of NE and dopamine from stimulated neurons, selectively modulates the responsiveness of hyperactive neurons that might contribute to the manic state. Therapeutic Level-0.6-1.2 mEq/L
  3. Antipsychotics-
Typical: Chlorpromazine (Thorazine), Haloperidal (Haldol), Prochlorperazine (Compazine).
Clozapine (Clorazil),Olanzapine (Zyprexa), Risperadone (Risperadal), Ziprasidone (Geodon), Quetiapine (Seroquel)
Block dopamine receptors preventing stimulation of postsynaptic neurons, (typical). Block both dopamine and serotonin receptors (atypical). schizophrenia.
  4. Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta)
    Dexmethylphenidate (Focalin)
    Dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine) Modafinil (Provigil)
CNS stimulants-act as cortical and RAS stimulants by increasing release of catecholamones from presynaptic neurons leading to increase in stimulation of postsynaptic neurons.Used for ADD, behaviral syndromes, narcolepsy, and improvement of wakefulness.
