Ch. 16 Pulmonary functions

  1. Pulmonary ventilation
    medical term for breathing
  2. Pulmonary Functions test
Used clinically to asses pulmonary function. The clinical technique is known as spirometry
  3. Lung volumes
the nonoverlapping components of the total lung capacity
  4. Tidal Volume
the volume of gas inspired or expired during each normal (unforced) ventilation cycle
  5. Inspiratory Reserve volume
the maximum volume of gas that can be forcefully inhaled after a normal (tidal) inhalation
  6. Expiratory Reserve volume
the maximum volume of gas that can be forcefully exhaled after a normal (tidal) exhalation
  7. Residual Volume
the volume of gas remaining in the lungs after a maximum (forced) expiration
  8. Lung Capacities
measurements that are the sum of 2 or more lung volumes
  9. Vital capacity
the maximum volume of gas that can be forcefully exhaled after a maximum inhalation
  10. Total lung capacity
the total volume of gas in the lungs after a maximum (forced) inhalation
  11. Inspiratory capacity
the maximum volume of gas that can be inhaled after a normal (tidal) (unforced) exhalation
  12. Functional Residual capacity
