Bouncing the ball with the hands or controlling it with the feet, usually while travelling

- - Eyes looking forward

- Maintain visual focus on the object to be struck
- Step into the swing. Transfer weight from back foot to front foot

Side Arm Strike
Propelling an object using the hand or an implement using a side arm action

Mature characteristics of Side arm Strike
Legs bent with hands out in front
- Watch the object to be struck all the time
- Transfer weight from back foot to front foot
- Turn so that the shoulder opposite the striking hand is facing the object to be struck

[Side arm strike] If children are not watching the incoming object
then: ask them to watch an X marked on an incoming ball

[Side arm strike] If children are not opening up when getting prepared to strike
they should get in the ready position facing the incoming object and then turn sideways with their arms apart; toss a ball to them and let it bounce - turn sideways at the bounce

[side arm strike] If children are striking the object outside the hitting zone (out front of the foot closest to the target)
Place a ball on a cone or batting tee and hit the ball in the hitting zone

- Knees are slightly bent and the weight is on the rear foot
- Focus on the target

Kick
Striking an object with the foot

Mature characterisitcs for KICK
- Stand behind the ball
- Step forward with the kicking foot
- Kicking leg with knee bent swings freely from the hip through an arc toward the ball

Then without using a ball, the child sould stand on non-kicking foot and practice full-range leg swing with the kicking leg

[kick] Non kicking foot is not planted beside the ball
Place a mark where the child should plant the non-kicking foot

make a mark on the ball to show child point of contact

Overhand throw

- - Throwing arm cirlces downward and backward to make a W shape with arms and body

[overhand throw] children are not standing sideways to the target
they should straddle a line so that the shoulder opposite the throwing hand is facing the target

[over hand throw] children are taking the object upwards in preparation to throw
they should make a downward cirlce and take the object behind the head

[overhand throw] children are not keeping their eyes on the target
a partner can hold some flash cards with letters or numberfs on them as the thrower goes through the throwing action but does not throw anything

overhand throw] children are stepping forward with the foot on the same side as the throwing arm
a partner can hold the object to be thrown behin the thrower so that the thrower has to reach behind them

overhand throw] children are stepping with a small step with the opposite foot
place a skipping rope a bit further forward and coach the thrower to step across the rope. gradually add more distance to increase the length of the step

overhand throw] children rotate their trunk and hips as a block
instruct children to get into their final preparation position. lead them in how to isolate some hip rotation and then rotate their upper body and shoulders
