  1. Commutative
    addition: 2 + 3 = 3 + 2

    multiplication: 2*3 = 3*2 (xy = yx)
  2. Associative
    addition: (2+5) + 7 = 2 + (5+7)

    multiplication: (ab)c = a(bc)
  3. Identity
    addition: 2 + 0 + 0

    multiplication: 2*1 = 2
  4. Inverse
    addition: a + (-a) = 0

    multiplication: a*1/a = 1
  5. Distributive
    addition: 2(x +y) = 2x +2y

    multiplication: 5x + 5y = 5(x + y)
