Pitressin

• Vasopressor, and antidiuretic hormone extracted
• from animal posterior pituitaries

Acts directly on smooth muscle receptors to produce potent non-adrenergic vasoconstriction

• 1. To increase peripheral vascular resistance in CPR (as an alternativeto epinephrine) ***Please see ACLS 2010***
• 2. Control of hemorrhage from esophageal varices

• 1. Ischemic heart disease
• 2. Advanced arteriosclerosis
• 3. During labor

• 1. Shunting of blood from periphery
• 2. Hypertension
• 3. MI

• Replacing, or refractory to epi in arrest
• Adult: 40 units IV/IO. No repeat dose needed Can replace first or second dose of Epinephrine

Hemorrhage from esophageal varices Infused 0.2-0.4 units/min
