Description:
Vasopressor, and antidiuretic hormone extracted
from animal posterior pituitaries
Actions:
Acts directly on smooth muscle receptors to produce potent non-adrenergic vasoconstriction
Indications:
1. To increase peripheral vascular resistance in CPR (as an alternativeto epinephrine) ***Please see ACLS 2010***
2. Control of hemorrhage from esophageal varices
Contraindications:
1. Ischemic heart disease
2. Advanced arteriosclerosis
3. During labor
Side Effects:
1. Shunting of blood from periphery
2. Hypertension
3. MI
Administration:
Replacing, or refractory to epi in arrest
Adult
: 40 units IV/IO. No repeat dose needed Can replace first or second dose of Epinephrine
Hemorrhage from esophageal varices Infused 0.2-0.4 units/min
Onset/Duration:
Duration 30-60 min
