chemistry

  1. mass
measure of the amount of matter the object contains
  2. volume
meausre of the space occupied by the object
  3. extensive property
property that depends on the amount of matter in a sample (quantity, how much)
  4. intensive property
property that depends on the type of matter ina sample, not the amount of matter (structure, reaction itself)
  5. substance
matter that has a definite and uniform composition
  6. physical property
quality or condition of a property that can be observed or meausred without changing the substances composition
  7. solid
form of matter that has a definite shape and volume, doesnt depend on shape of container
  8. liquid
form of matter that has an indefinite shape, flows, yet has a fixed volume
  9. gas
form of mastter that takes both the shape and volume of its container
  10. vapor
describes gaseous state of a substance that is genereally a liquid or solid at room temperature
  11. physical change
some properties of a material change, but the compostion of the material does not change
  12. mixture
physical blend of two or more compounds
  13. heterogenous mixture
mixture in which the compostion is not uniform throughout
  14. homogenous mixture
mixture in which the composition is uniform throughtout. aka. solution
  15. phase
used to describe any part of a sample with uniform composition and properties.
  16. filtration
process that seperates a solid from a liquid in a heterogenous mixture
  17. distillation
a liquid is boiled to produce a vapor that is then condesnsed into a liquid
  18. element
simplest form of matter that has a unique set of properties ex. oxygen plus hydrogen
  19. compound
substance that contains two or more elements chemically combined in a fixed proportion ex. sucrose
  20. chenical change
change that produces matter with a different composition then the original matter. ex- heating
  21. chemical symbol
one or two letter symbol that represents an element
  22. period
horizontal row of the periodic table of elements
  23. group
    each veritcal column
  24. chemical property
ability of a substance to undergo a specific chemical change. ex. ability to rust
  25. chemical reaction
one or more substances changes into one or more new substances
  26. reactant
substance present at the start of a reaction
  27. product
    substance produced in the reaction
  28. precipitate
a solid that forms and settles out of a liquid mixture
  29. law of conservation of mass
states that in any physical change or chemcial reaction mass must be conserved. mass is neither created nor destroyed
